Whether we are talking about Hannibal Lecter, Sweeney Todd, the witch in Hansel and Gretel, or the many accounts from early human history, cannibalism makes us uncomfortable. And why wouldn’t it? Who wants to think about people eating other people or worse, being on the menu yourself?

What is the longest a person can hold their breath for, and survive without obvious brain damage? No Googling… Five, ten, maybe even 15 minutes? Take a deep breath… how about 22 minutes!? That's the Guinness World Record. Given what we know about the enormous risks of permanent damage if the brain is starved of oxygen for even short periods, how on earth can that be possible?

A baby with a cure?

In 2010, a woman who had received no pre-natal care arrived at a hospital in rural Mississippi already in labour. Tests revealed she was HIV-positive. She gave birth to her baby girl before medication could be given which may have prevented the transmission of the virus from her to her baby.
